With the first weekend of training camp behind us, we sat down for a chat this morning with coach Travis Young to get his observations.
Overall thoughts: “Definitely pleased. Work ethic has been top notch. The older guys have been very upbeat. And we’re really excited about the young players we’ve drafted in the last two years. They’ve been really good so far. There’s lot to be excited about with our kids.”
Early standouts: “(Centre) Brady Hunter, who we traded for at the draft has been exceptional. We’re really high on him. Sam Grant is another one. (The forward) was a sixth round pick this year. He’s a big kid, skates well. He’s got talent”.
Thoughts on the intra-squad game: “Pleasantly surprised. Everything’s been positive. It was real competitive. The guys were going hard. There’s a good vibe around this team. They’re bonding, gelling. That’s the kind of stuff you’re looking for.”
The Q guys: “We should know better in the next few days about the guys we have up at those camps. We could get as many as five or six back.”
The week ahead: “Battling drills, competing, systems, D and forward sessions, intrasquad game Wednesday night, practice Thursday and exhibition games this weekend.”
Young added that coming into camp he anticipated there were as many as six roster spots open.
